"Coco Before Chanel" has become the second-highest grossing French language film at the UK Box Office. The only film ahead of it is "Amélie", which has grossed £5.7 million.

The UK premiere of Coco Before Chanel took place at the 1st Screen Lit Film TV and Writing Festival at the Broadway Cinema and Media Centre in Nottingham on Monday 29 June 2009. The film was chosen as the Opening Night Gala of this new festival.


Since the release of Coco avant Chanel on 22 April 2009 the number of admissions in France is now over 1 million. In July 2009, the film also passed 1 million admissions internationally.

Marie Gillain has joined the cast of the French film Coco avant Chanel which is directed by Anne Fontaine (Comment j'ai tué mon père). The role of Gabrielle Coco Chanel is played by Audrey Tautou with Marie cast as her sister. The film also stars Emmanuelle Devos and Benoît Poelvoorde. The movie focuses on Coco Chanel's childhood and the designer's life before she became famous. The film is distributed in France by Warner Bros Entertainment France and internationally by Warner Bros. The film was released in France on 22 April 2009. Official Site (French)

CONCERT WITH THE MONTE-CARLO PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

Marie Gillain appeared with the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra in the "Young Audience" concert on Wednesday 6th May 2009 at 4.00pm. She was the narrator in a performance of Ma Mère l'Oye (Mother Goose) by Maurice Ravel in the Auditorium Rainier III, Monte-Carlo, Monaco. These popular concerts are particularly aimed at children and are designed to increase their interest and awareness in music from an early age. Source: OPMC website

 

FEMALE AGENTS AT THE CÉSARS

Marie Gillain's film Female Agents (Les Femmes de l'ombre) which was shown throughout the UK in 2008, was nominated in the Best Costume category at the 34th César Film Awards. The ceremony which celebrates the best in French cinema took place on Friday 27th February 2009 at the Théâtre Châtelet in Paris. The award went to Madeline Fontaine for the film Séraphine. UPDATED


MAGIQUE! WINS BEST FILM

Magique! was awarded Best Film in the Alice In The City section of the 2008 Rome International Film Festival. Built around 12 films in competition, this section of the festival programme brings together an international selection of works dedicated to cinema made for and by young people. UK & Ireland Screenings

Following the recent preview screenings, Female Agents opened in the UK on 27 June and a list of cinemas showing the film can be found here. The previews have been screened throughout the UK over the last few weeks and several have included "Q & A" sessions with director Jean-Paul Salomé and actress Déborah François.

There was a special preview screening of Female Agents at the Institut Français in South Kensington, London on Monday 5 May 2008. The film was introduced by Sophie Marceau. This was the UK premiere of Marie Gillain's latest film, which has proved very successful in France with over 800,000 admissions. Female Agents is released by Revolver Entertainment in the UK.

Marie Gillain attended the premiere of her new film Les Femmes de L'Ombre (Female Agents) at the UGC Paris Bercy cinema on 3 March 2008. She was joined by other members of the cast, including Sophie Marceau and Julie Depardieu. The film opened in France on 5 March 2008. There are several video clips on the French cinema website Allociné. I have added more photos from the film and they can be found on the CINEMA/LES FEMMES DE L'OMBRE page.

KUNG FU PANDA
 

Kung Fu Panda Poster - France Cannes International Film Festival Poster 2008    

Marie Gillain is the voice of Master Tigress in the French version of the new animated feature from Dreamworks, Kung Fu Panda. The film was released in France on 9 July 2008 and was shown "out of competition" at the 61st Cannes International Film Festival on 15 May 2008. The American actress Angelina Jolie plays the part in the original version. The film was released in the UK on 4 July 2008. PUBLIC APPEARANCES 2008

Marie Gillain enjoys a glass of champagne on stage at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris on 22 February 2008 during the French film awards (Césars). She was presenting the award for Best Costume Design which was won by La Môme (La Vie En Rose). See the video of the presentation. Sadly, the winner Marit Allen died of a brain aneurysm in November 2007. The film went on to win 5 Césars including Best Actress for Marion Cotillard. Following the ceremony, Marie attended the César Party at Club 79's in Paris (photo 3) and the César dinner at the Fouquet's restaurant in Paris (photo 4).

The new film Paris by French director Cédric Klapisch and starring Juliette Binoche was premiered in Paris on 11 February 2008. Marie Gillain was among the guests who attended the screening.

Marie Gillain attended the 2008 Sidaction Gala Dinner in Paris on 24 January (see photograph below). The Aids benefit took place during Paris Fashion week, Spring/Summer 2008 Haute Couture at the Pavillon d'Armenonville.

LA TRÈS TRÈS GRANDE ENTERPRISE

Marie Gillain is to star in a new French film "La Très très grande entreprise" (translated as The Very, Very Big Business) which is being directed by Pierre Jolivet (Zim and Co., Ma petite entreprise). Shooting began in January 2008. The film is released in France on 5 November 2008. Source: Allociné.

 

MARIE GILLAIN ATTENDS FILM PREMIERE

Although Marie Gillain had two films released in France on 19 December 2007, she still found time to attend the premiere of "Actrices" in Paris on 17 December (see photo below). The film is directed by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi who also stars in the movie, and also features Mathieu Amalric and Valeria Golino.

ÉDIE ROMANTIQUE Trailer-Extracts-Making Of

The film trailer and extracts for "Ma Vie N'Est Pas Une Comédie Romantique" (It Had To Be You) have been posted on the French websites Comme au Cinéma and Allociné.

The film screened at The 2007 Festival of Jewish Cinema in Melbourne, Australia on Saturday 17 November at 9.30pm and Saturday 24 November at 9.15pm. More details can be found at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image website

FESTIVAL AWARD

Marie Gillain's forthcoming film, Ma Vie N'Est Pas Une Comédie Romantique (It Had To Be You) was shown "in competition" at the recent Festival International des Jeunes Realisateurs (International Festival of Young Directors) in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, France. The award "Prix de la Créativité" (Creativity Prize) went to the film's director, Marc Gibaja. It was released in France on 19 December 2007.

Festival International du Film Francophone de Namur 2007 (28 September - 5 October)

La Clef, one of Marie Gillain's forthcoming films had it's premiere at the 22nd Namur International French Film Festival in October. The film, a thriller, is directed by Guillaume Nicloux and also stars Guillaume Canet and singer/actress Vanessa Paradis. It opened in France on 19 December 2007. Screenings at the Belgian festival were on 3, 4 and 5 October. The film was shown "out of competetion"

Pars vite et reviens tard has been shown at several festivals and details can be found in the film section.

Fragile(s), (aka By The Way) opened in France on 20 June 2007 and the French Trailer together with several videos can be found on Allociné's website (all clips are in French). There is also an International Trailer on the site of Roissy Films, which is handling world sales of the film. The trailer is in the original French language but with English Subtitles

Marie Gillain's recently completed films, Fragile(s) and Ma Vie Sans Meg Ryan were shown at the 2007 Cannes Film Market which was held during the 60th Cannes Film Festival (16th - 27th May). The English titles for these films are By The Way (Fragiles) and It Had To Be You (Ma Vie Sans Meg Ryan).

César Film Awards 2007

Marie Gillain was a guest at the 32nd César Film Awards at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris on Saturday 24th February 2007. The photographs show Marie attending the ceremony and gala dinner. The French film Lady Chatterley was the big winner with 5 awards including Best Film. The American Independent Film Little Miss Sunshine won Best Foreign Language Film.

Pars Vite et Reviens Tard opens in France

The new film directed by Régis Wargnier was shown at the Opening Gala of the 9th Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in Paris on 12th January 2007. The photographs show Marie at the screening.

Pars vite et reviens tard opened in France on 24th January 2007 and admissions for the first day in Paris were 12,572. After the first week, the film entered the French Box Office charts at number 2, with 420,262 admissions, beaten only by the return of Rocky Balboa. At the end of the fourth week admissions in France had increased to 801,521. UPDATED. Source: Allociné.

An alternative English title for this film is Seeds Of Death

Marie and co-star José Garcia appeared on the French television programme Le Grand Journal (Canal Plus) on 23rd January promoting the film. Another of the actresses in the film, Linh Dan Pham recently featured on UK television in the play This Life + 10, which was a sequel to the very popular series This Life. Pars vite et reviens tard has also opened in Belgium and Switzerland.

MARIE GILLAIN AT THE 2006 CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

 

Marie Gillain attending the premiere of the French film Selon Charlie (Charlie Says) at the 59th Cannes Film Festival on 20 May 2006. The film directed by Nicole Garcia was shown "in competition".

One of Marie's future projects, Black Box has been selected for inclusion in the Atelier Section of the Cinéfondation at the Cannes Festival. The Atelier organises appointments with professionals who wish to meet with filmmakers and their producers, with a view to completing their films' financing.

Prix de la Jeunesse (Young Audiences Award)

The 25th Prix de la Jeunesse was awarded to the film Bled Number One (Back Home) directed by Rabah Amew-Zaïmeche. The jury comprised of seven young European film fans who watched and judged fourteen films from the Official Selection and Un Certain Regard section of the Festival. This year the event was sponsored by Marie Gillain and the photograph shows her at the award ceremony held on 27 May 2006 at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.
